Please Read the Following Information Carefully.

Patient Information

Registration: As part of the initial admission process medical history and a data protection declaration need to be completed. It is important to list your complete medication. Please alert the office if you have a medical condition that may be of concern.

Radiographs: If you already have recent radiographs of the region of interest, please send them to us in advance (by e-mail or mail), or carry them with you at your first appointment.

Insurance: Dental treatment costs in Switzerland are typically not covered by health insurance and must be paid privately. However, there are exceptions, such as treatments related to pre- registered accidents. If your treatment is related to an accident, please inform the front desk when scheduling your appointment. We will require additional information in advance, including details about the cost bearer (accident or health insurance) and relevant documentation. Providing this information in advance allows us to communicate efficiently and expedite the approval process. If you have any questions, please contact our front desk for assistance.

Jewlery: Please be aware that a 3D radiography (CBCT scan) may be required (see also ‚Good to Know‘ section). For this, all metal jewelry and piercings must be removed from the head and neck area. To ensure a seamless process, please avoid wearing metal jewelry to your appointment or wear items that can be easily taken off.

Root Canal Treatment

Medication: Unless we’ve discussed otherwise, please continue taking all prescribed medication
for blood pressure, diabetes, and other conditions as usual.

Local Anesthesia: Root canal treatments are performed under local anesthesia. As with other dental procedures, there are generally no significant restrictions afterwards.

Meals: There’s no need to fast before your appointment, or attend with an empty stomach. In fact, it’s recommended to have breakfast or lunch as usual.

Antibiotic Prophylaxis: If your general physician or cardiologist has prescribed antibiotic prophylaxis (e.g., for a heart condition), please take the antibiotic medicament as prescribed, typically one hour before the procedure.

Antibiotics are not needed for consultations or follow-up visits. For further details on endocarditis prophylaxis. If you have any questions, please contact your general physician, cardiologist, or our office—we’re happy to help.

Analgesics: Post-operative discomfort following root canal treatment is common and varies among patients. The discomfort is usually mild (often) to moderate (rarely). Symptoms typically subside within 1-3 days and can be effectively managed—if necessary—with over-the-counter pain killers. We will tailor your pain management plan after your consultation or treatment visit.

Sensitivity to Biting: After post-operative discomfort eases, teeth that have undergone root canal treatment may remain sensitive to biting for a few days. During this time, the tissue around the root tip is healing. This sensitivity typically resolves on its own and does not require special attention or medication.

Report: Once your treatment is complete, your general dentist will receive a copy of the treatment report, along with any images taken during the procedure.

Endodontic Surgery

Blood Thinning: Please inform us if you’re taking blood-thinning medication or pain relievers (e.g., aspirin), as some may need to be temporarily stopped before the procedure. Your general physician or cardiologist will usually decide if this is possible. If so, please consult with us, and set a reminder of the planned discontinuation in your personal agenda.

Premedication: In certain cases, premedication may be necessary, such as taking an antibiotic for endocarditis prophylaxis, usually one hour before the procedure. Whether this is required will be determined during your consultation. Please take the medication as instructed and note any discontinuation plans in your personal agenda.

Premedication: Under certain conditions, it may be necessary to take medication before the surgical intervention, e.g. an antibiotic, which is usually taken one hour before the intervention. If premeditation is necessary will be determined individually in the consultation before the treatment. Please take the medication as prescribed and set a reminder of the planned discontinuation in your personal agenda.

Meals: There’s no need to fast before your appointment. In fact, it’s recommended to eat breakfast or lunch as usual.

Oral Hygiene: Practice thorough but not excessive oral hygiene for at least three days before the procedure. This helps to optimally prepare your gums.

Cool-pack: After surgery, we will provide a cool pack for immediate use. It’s also advisable to have additional cool packs ready in your freezer at home.

Getting home: You should not drive or cycle immediately after the procedure. We recommend using public transport or arranging for someone to take you home.

Take it Easy: If possible, take it easy for the remainder of the day. There are typically no major restrictions by the next day.

General Recommendations: We will provide a document with instructions regarding oral hygiene, physical activity, and general post-surgery care.

Medication: It is recommended to take an anti-inflammatory pain reliever for 3-5 days after the procedure. Additional medications, such as antibiotics, may be necessary depending on the circumstances. Your post-operative medication plan will be customized to your needs. Various pharmacies are available in walking distance to our office for convenience.

According to numerous international peer-reviewed studies, teeth that undergo root canal treatment have a very high likelihood of long-term success.
